"Each of these poems takes its title from one set of Emily Dickinson's variants. To compose them, I [Austin] selectively removed language from dictionary definitions of each of the variant words indicated in the title to find the "difference" (in loosely "mathematical terms) between them. After each of several passes through using this process of erasure, I [Austin] selected among the words, phrases, and clusters of letters that remained, then collaged them together." - Nathan Austin
